Story of a 22 year old earning millions from tyres

Ahmed’s Story

As I read today’s Sunday Standard I was touched by a story of a 22 year old entrepreneur, whom life challenges has never stopped him from achieving his dream. When Ahmed Dubow Subanea was a young boy, he always dreamt of having his own business. An age where most of his peers are pursuing their education, at only 22 he runs his own business specializing in car parts.

Ahmed was born in Korakora village in Garissa. He used to wake up early to a scorching sun as he headed to school, he never allowed the harsh environment drive him to despair they lived the best life they knew. This helped to prepare him for the harsh realities of the business world.

Ahmed’s father raised him together with his siblings after their mother passed away when he was very young. His father refused to re-marry so that he could devote himself to taking care of them until they grew up. Ahmed and his four siblings had to walk for almost 20 kilometers to school, deep inside their hearts  they knew that with their hard work, suffering would be a thing of the past.

While Ahmed was in high school, school fees proved to be a hard nut to be cracked, as his dad could not afford. Luckily his headteacher intervened so that Ahmed could complete his education.

When he cleared his high school studies in 2010, Ahmed enrolled in Africa Nazarene University, for a diploma in IT, immediately he got a job at IT firm in Hurlingam. After five months he joined Hass Petroleum where he worked in lubricants department. Later he joined Car & General, where he worked as a sales executive. This aroused the love for tyres.

After working for a while at Car and General, Ahmed felt that he wanted to be his own boss, and be an employer too. Though he started small by selling a few tires and a car wash his vision compelled him to work even harder.

Ahmed believes that success is gradual and that most people fail, because they expect to make millions in just a few months of start up. Currently he runs Nairobi Tyres that deals in tyres, tubes, rims , car batteries among others. His company has two branches on in Eastleigh and another in Embakasi and he has managed to hire 4 employees. He currently earns a good sum from his business every month.

Indeed a challenge to his age mate and everyone. If he made it why not you?

“You can’t just sit there and wait for people to give you that golden dream. You’ve got to get out there and make it happen for yourself.”
